Klang River Waste Management: Strengthening Sungai Pinang and Scaling Up
Our team recently visited the Waste-Sorting Recycling Facility at Sungai Pinang, Klang—owned and operated by Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project. Since beginning operations in December 2024, the facility has served as a key on-shore hub to process waste removed from Sungai Klang and its tributaries, improving recycling rates and reducing landfill burden. Why We Visited
This visit focused on identifying targeted enhancements and upgrades that we can support in collaboration with LLSB/SMG—from throughput improvements and material flow to better pre-sorting for plastics and organics. Strengthening Sungai Pinang will help ensure that everything intercepted from the river can be processed efficiently and responsibly.
Building a Network of Riverfront Facilities
Sungai Pinang is currently the only such operational waste-sorting node along Sungai Klang. To match the scale of collection, we’re prioritising new facilities at Kg Delek, Sungai Kandis, and Kinrara. These sites will complement Sungai Pinang as part of an integrated river waste management network, closing the loop between on-water interception and on-shore processing.
Interception at Scale: Boom Traps and Skimmers
Our plan includes deploying 40 boom traps and numerous skimmers at strategic locations to capture floating waste upstream and midstream before it travels downstream. On-shore capacity is the crucial counterpart: without robust sorting and recovery facilities, interception alone cannot deliver lasting results. Sungai Pinang + Kg Delek + Sungai Kandis + Kinrara form the first wave—additional facilities will follow as demand grows and data guides expansion.
Environmental Outcomes First
Every kilogram of waste intercepted and reprocessed:
reduces plastic leakage into the river and coastal waters,
lowers flood risk from blocked drains and channels, and
supports healthier riparian and aquatic ecosystems.
The emphasis is on ecosystem restoration and resilience—cleaner water, safer communities, and biodiversity recovery along the Klang River corridor.
Where This Fits in the Coastal Oasis Masterplan
Our Coastal Oasis Masterplan integrates waste management, mangrove and forest restoration, and sustainable river infrastructure. The Sungai Pinang upgrade support and the build-out at Kg Delek, Sungai Kandis, and Kinrara are part of the waste management programme within that broader plan. Each component is sequenced by urgency, criticality, and precision, ensuring resources go where they deliver the greatest environmental impact.
